The Body Care Boom Decoded
Consumer skin care spending is moving beyond the face. Per Circana, 2024's body skin care sales outperformed the facial segment, driven by formats such as creams, lotions, cleansers and hand soaps. Let’s break down those trends.
According to Circana data, mass body care retail sales volume totaled $6.9 billion in 2024. Notably, upstart ingredient-focused brands are taking market share among body wash shoppers, but hand and body lotion is still ruled by establishment, dermatologist-backed and natural brands.
Body creams were the superstar of the prestige body care space, generating about 70% of incremental dollar volume gains and growing by 20%. Brands highlighting retinol (driving 17% growth) and shimmer effects (driving 158% growth) outperformed the overall category, per Circana. Prestige hand soap sales, meanwhile, grew 124%.
Unlocking Growth: the Booming Wellness Market
The combined U.S. beauty and wellness market grew 5% in 2024, totaling $225 billion, per Circana data presented at the 2025 CEW state of the industry event. Across all households, the dollars spent on wellness products, including vitamins, supplements and weight control/nutritional products, are up 8.5% year-over-year. For mass beauty buyers, that increases to 8.6%. But for prestige shoppers? That increase totals 12%. This offers a clear opportunity for beauty brands to further tie into wellness benefits.
