Givaudan Active Beauty has launched Evernityl, a marine-derived active developed to fight a newly identified culprit behind skin aging: porphyrins, i.e., metabolites produced by the skin's microbiota that play a role in skin aging; i.e., what the company refers to as Porphyr-ageing. Sourced sustainably from the macroalgae Laminaria hyperborea, the ingredient is reportedly the result of an innovative upcycling process that transforms fresh algae into a highly potent solution for healthier, more youthful-looking skin.

Key Functions and Benefits of Evernityl

According to the company, Evernityl (INCI: Laminaria Hyperborea Extract (and) Citric Acid (and) Sorbic Acid) inhibits the production of porphyrins produced by skin's microbiota, and in turn their negative impact, while imparting additional skin benefits for a holistic approach. Positive effects including the following.

  • Spot reduction and even skin tone: The ingredient blocks porphyrin-induced melanogenesis, minimizing precursors to dark spots and promoting a smoother, more balanced complexion.
  • Enhanced structural resilience: The ingredient stimulates the synthesis of extracellular matrix (ECM) constituents, fortifying the skin’s elasticity and firmness, and helping to reduce visible wrinkles and maintain overall dermal health.
  • Autophagy support to enhance the clearance of porphyrins, reducing further harmful skin effects.

Microbiome Exploration Leads to Porphyr'aging

During the IFSCC 2024 Congress, Givaudan Active Beauty revealed a significant discovery in skin microbiota research: porphyr'aging, a newly classified biological mechanism linked to the production of porphyrins. As the company explained, these metabolites not only accelerate aging, but also contribute to specific visible effects, such as uneven texture and discoloration. This was the basis for the development of Evernityl.

Romain Reynaud, research and development director for the company, commented: “Our exploration of the skin microbiome reached yet another milestone with the discovery of Porphyr’ageing. Universal and inclusive, Evernityl works on multiple levels to address existing signs of aging while proactively preventing future skin damage, making it a comprehensive solution for healthier and more youthful-looking skin.”
